Advanced & emerging — overview
This section covers frontier and emerging approaches to hydrogen sensing.
Pages:
- Plasmonic & metamaterial sensors — engineered palladium and Pd-alloy nanostructures whose optical resonance shifts on hydride formation, reaching ppb-to-ppm sensitivity with an intrinsically spark-free, zero-downhole-electronics optical readout. On the bench this is well matched to Hestia’s exploration window, but there is no field-hardened instrument yet and the sole commercial vendor is exiting the hydrogen business.
- Sensor arrays, e-noses & ML selectivity — cross-reactive arrays of cheap, imperfect gas sensors plus pattern-recognition or drift-correction algorithms can legitimately upgrade a screening grid, but no source validates this pipeline for geologic-H₂ soil gas, and no software layer can fix a poorly-conditioned hardware array.
Related frontier electronic approaches — 2D-material and FET-based devices — are covered under FET & 2D-material sensors in the electrical section.
